Sunday London Ride Hawksmoor Tour - 4 September (day ride)
Ride Leader: Jenny (with guest leader Mircea).
An architectural social ride that will take us to buildings designed by (or attributed to) Nicholas Hawksmoor.
A disciple and assistant to Sir Christopher Wren (the star architect of the second half of the 17th century), Nicholas Hawksmoor was a leading figure of the English Baroque style. He is acknowledged for his contribution to reshaping the City of London skyline in the decades after the Great Fire of 1666 and for designing the west towers of Westminster Abbey and six new churches in (then) suburban/rural parishes such as Stepney and Greenwich. This was part of Queen Anne’s (as played by Olivia Coleman in The Favourite) Commission for Building Fifty New Churches in 1711.
The approx. 27 mile ride starts at London Bridge station, departing at 10.00am. We’ll ride as far west as Kensington Gardens and as far east as Greenwich. The route is very flat and will mainly be along dedicated cycle paths/lanes and quieter streets (although there will be times where we may need to venture out into some traffic, and also short portions where we may need to walk our bikes).
The route crosses the Thames via the Greenwich foot tunnel, Or, if the lifts there are out of order, an alternative crossing. Final details of this will be confirmed before the ride.
We expect to arrive back at London Bridge mid to late afternoon.
